He was born in Mexico in 1975 and joined the Mexican Army in 1993. He later deserted and became a member of the Gulf Cartel, a powerful drug cartel that operated in northeastern Mexico. He rose through the ranks and became the leader of a faction of the cartel called Los Zetas, which was composed of former military personnel. He was responsible for many violent crimes, such as kidnappings, extortions, murders, and massacres. He was also involved in a bloody war with other rival cartels, such as the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
