Former NFL running back Alex Collins dies in motorcycle crash at 28.
Former NFL running back Alex Collins, who played for the Seattle Seahawks and the Baltimore Ravens, died in a motorcycle crash on Sunday night in Florida, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He was 28 years old.
Motorcycle Crash:
Collins was driving his motorcycle on West Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderdale Lakes when he collided with the rear passenger side of an SUV, the sheriff’s office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
Collins was drafted by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of the University of Arkansas, where he was a standout running back. Alex played one season with Seattle before being released and signing with the Ravens’ practice squad. He became the Ravens’ starting running back in 2017 and led the team with 973 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Alex also became known for his Irish dancing celebration, which he learned from his high school coach’s daughter.
He played 10 games for the Ravens in 2018 before suffering a season-ending foot injury. Alex did not play in 2019 but returned to the Seahawks in 2020-2021 for his final stint in the NFL. He played 25 games for both teams, totaling 1,997 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, as well as 467 receiving yards.
Most recently, Collins played for the United States Football League’s Memphis Showboats this past season.
Condolences:
Collins’ family, friends, teammates, and coaches expressed their grief and condolences on social media and in statements.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Alex Collins this morning,” Collins’ family said in a statement via the Seahawks on Monday night. “Alex was cherished by his family and friends as well as supporters from all around the world. All who truly know him can attest to his drive, determination, and larger-than-life personality. We kindly request your thoughts and prayers for our family during this difficult time. We ask for privacy as we navigate through our grief.”
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who played with Collins in both of his stints with Seattle, posted a tribute on Twitter.
“To one of my favorite teammates. You brought joy to every huddle. Keep Dancin’ in Heaven. Love you AC. Forever missed,” Wilson wrote.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh also remembered Collins as a joyful and determined player who contributed to the team’s success.
“Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “I’ll always remember him for being a great teammate who had an uplifting spirit that impacted everyone he encountered. He was also a smart player who ran with unlimited determination, and he contributed to a lot of our success during his time in Baltimore. We send our heartfelt condolences and support to Alex’s family. May he now rest in God’s eternal peace.”
Collins is the second former Arkansas and Ravens player to die this year, following quarterback Ryan Mallett, who drowned in June.
