•  Jaime Adolfo Martínez Miranda, 21, a bricklayer and soccer fanatic who dreamed of playing professionally.

•  Dante Cedillo Hernández, 22, a professional cyclist who won two gold medals in different national competitions and was studying engineering.

•  Juan Carlos González García, 20, a mechanic who loved cars and motorcycles.

•  Marco Antonio García Hernández, 19, a student who enjoyed music and dancing.

•  José Guadalupe Aguilar Esparza, 22, a carpenter who liked to play guitar and sing.

The five friends had grown up together in the same neighborhood and shared a passion for sports and adventure. They had traveled to Lagos de Moreno to attend a festival called “La Feria de la Virgen”, which celebrates the patron saint of the city.

According to their families, the five friends left the festival around 10 p.m. on August 11 and called their relatives to say they were on their way home. They never arrived.

5 Mexican Students Killed in Jalisco Video:

The next day, a disturbing video appeared on social media, showing the five friends kneeling on the ground, surrounded by masked men armed with guns and knives. The video had a text overlay that read “Puro MZ”, an apparent reference to El Mayo Zambada, the leader of a faction of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

In the video, one of the captors orders one of the victims to stab and behead another one, threatening to kill them all if he refuses. The terrified youth complies with the gruesome demand, while the others watch in horror. The video ends with the sound of gunshots.

The families of the missing youths recognized their clothing and appearance in the video and reported it to the authorities. The Jalisco state prosecutor’s office launched an investigation and searched for the location where the video was filmed.

Investigation:

On August 16, investigators raided a series of brick and concrete buildings on a ranch near Lagos de Moreno and found bloodstains on the floor and shoes scattered about. They also found four burned and decapitated bodies that matched the description of the victims in the video. A fifth body was found earlier inside a burned-out car in the area.

The prosecutor’s office said it was working to identify the bodies and confirm if they were the five missing friends. It also said it was investigating the possible involvement of drug cartels in the crime and called for federal prosecutors to take over the case.

The motive behind the brutal killings remains unclear, but some reports suggest that the five friends may have fallen into a trap set by a fake job offer. According to local media, one of the victims had received a phone call from an unknown number before they left for Lagos de Moreno, offering him a job as a security guard for a wealthy businessman.

The caller reportedly asked him to bring four friends along for an interview and promised them good pay and benefits. The friends agreed to go, thinking it was a legitimate opportunity. However, when they arrived at the designated meeting point, they were ambushed by armed men who kidnapped them and took them to the ranch.

Some sources claim that the kidnappers were members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a powerful criminal organization that controls most of Jalisco state and is at war with rival groups, including El Mayo Zambada’s faction of the Sinaloa cartel. The kidnappers allegedly tried to force the five friends to join their ranks as hitmen, but they refused. As a result, they were tortured and executed in a macabre show of force.

People’s Reaction:

The horrific case has shocked and outraged Mexico, recalling the darkest days of drug cartel violence in the country. In 2010, one Mexican cartel abducted men from passenger buses and forced them to fight each other to death with sledgehammers. That tragedy came to light in 2011, when authorities found 48 bodies in mass graves.

The families of the five slain friends have demanded justice and accountability from the authorities. Their families have also expressed their grief and pain over losing their loved ones in such a cruel way.

“They were good kids, they had dreams, they had goals,” said Jaime Martínez’s mother. “They didn’t deserve this.”

“They took away our happiness,” said Dante Cedillo’s father. “They took away our future.”

“They were not criminals, they were not involved in anything bad,” said Juan Carlos González’s sister. “They were just young people who wanted to live.”
